Various European Countries Periodical Collection

Custodial History

Collected by the CSD. The Collectie Sociale Documentatie (Collection Social Documentation [CSD]) was part of the University Library Amsterdam from 1973 until 1990. It has since passed to the IISH.

The collection is a combination of several previous collections that were too small (less than 12 cm) to include in the IISH catalogue individually. There were no lists of titles (with the exception of Austria) available. Inconsistencies in dealing with states that were later to become independent from the Soviet Union, as well as states that at the time of the publication of the periodical were part of a federation, have been resolved. The independent-to-be states have been included as separate states to emphasize their subaltern status in their federation, while federations where the states enjoyed somewhat more equal status (i.e. Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia) have been included as federations. Furthermore, the collections have been fully alphabetized, and a comprehensive list of “title; subtitle (year): no.” has been made. Like with the other CSD collections, duplicates of items already in the IISH catalogue have been removed, while additional nos. of periodicals already present at the IISH have been added there.

Collection of around 250 periodicals from various European countries, 1948-2000. The collection encompasses seventeen states with their particular histories and languages. A few key words that could give a suggestion of the scope are minority and other movements for social change, subcultural and art publications, and news and entertainment magazines.
