After the end of World War II a shortly-lived Soviet-backed client state was established in Iranian Azerbaijan with Tabriz as its capital; this Azerbaijan People's Government existed from November 1945 until November 1946; mid-December 1946 the Iranian army reentered Tabriz and ended the People's Government after a full year of its existence; many of the leaders took refuge in the Azerbaijan Soviet Republic.
