Biographical / Historical Note

Austrian psychologist and political activist; active in the Kommunistische Partei Österreichs (KPÖ) from 1919 and later in the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei; during the 1930s he participated in the German movement for left-wing unity Neu Beginnen; emigrated to the USA; involved in the foundation of the American Friends of German Freedom.

Microfilms received by the IISH from the Hoover Institution of War, Peace and Revolution, Stanford, California in 1975.

Manuscripts of books, articles and other writings 1939-1945; texts of lectures and speeches; files on Neu Beginnen, on the formation of the Council for a Democratic Germany (USA), on postwar Germany and on many other subjects; correspondence with Willy Brandt, Fritz Erler, Hans Hirschfeld, Thomas Mann and others 1939-1958.
